Old Town

In the shadow of snow-topped Jade Dragon Mountain, Lijiang rose to prominence 500 years ago as an entrepôt on the bandit-infested Tea and Horse caravan route. Horses came south from Tibet and Mongolia in the north and in exchange, brick tea was carried north on mule caravans. With its wooden buildings, canals and bridges, this unique city sits at the crossroads between different worlds, a fact strongly represented in the history, languages and peoples of the area. Naxi architecture can be said to represent the happy marriage of Han structures with Bai carpentry and Tibetan painting styles. If you’ve a linguist’s ear, you’ll hear Bai, Yi, Tibetan, Naxi, Mandarin, and a smattering of other languages echoing along the alleyways.
